Charlie Rose led off the show with a breakthrough story, which was reported in the magazine “Nature”, on the molecule in red wine called resveratrol that prolonged the life span of mice as well as reducing the risk of heart disease in a high calorie diet. Dr. David Sinclair, a Harvard medical researcher, discovered that it was resveratrol that activated a gene the controls the aging process. Resveratrol was the only one of over 20,000 molecules that were researched that prolonged the life of the test subjects. When the mice were examined, he found that although the mice that was fed the resveratrol, although still obese, had lived 20% longer than the average and was much healthier in that time, and performed better on skilled tests. Because of the high amount of red wine that it is need to consume, researchers are working on ways to find a way to condense the necessary resveratrol intake for consumption by humans, without the alcohol, to have a beneficial result.
