Earlier tonight, “60 Minutes” ran a segment of possible health benefits of red wine, called “The French Paradox.” Morley Safer looked at how it was possible that the French could eat high fat food, like cheese which is consumed on average about 40 pounds a year, and have a low rate of heart failure as a cause of death in the country. Researchers concluded that the key variable was not only the type of fat, but also red wine. Safer reported that researchers believe that it is the consumption of red wine that reduces the risk of heart disease, despite a diet the includes great amounts of milk, cream, butter and so on. As a result of the finds in France, it is believed that the key to better health lies in the compounds in the red wine, namely resveratrol.
